Showcasing New Zealand art and creativity

Our History

Gallery van Gils began its life as -Art in a Box Ltd.

This was the brainchild of Bernice van Gils.  In 2004 she had the idea to make original artwork available in easy to handle, easy to send, affordable gift-box size.  The initial idea evolved from making gifts for friends and family.  Soon the popularity of these unique gifts spurred Bernice into action and she formed the Art in a Box company.

In 2005 Art in a Box Gallery was opened in the Square Edge Creative Centre in Palmerston North.  Over 40 artists contributed their work, including many skilled 'artisans'.  Each of the artists created miniature work, to fit in the gift boxes, as well as making available their major pieces.

Bernice made the move to Kaitoke in Wellington, in 2006, with her son and her Husband, Mark.  The gallery was closed and the artists were bid a sad farewell.  In 2009 Andrew Martin joined the company  and worked with Bernice on the redesign of the company and service offerings, as well as the implementation of Art in a Box Ltd as an e-commerce business.

In 2010 Mark Snow became a Co-Director, taking over the behind the scenes administration from Andrew.

The Art in a Box Ltd concept has grown to meet the demands and expectations of the wider community who have a passion and appreciation of art in the many genre that exist today. By providing a portal for NZ artists to feature their artworks in an online medium we are effectively bringing art work right to your home or business allowing you to browse and make a selection at your leisure.

In 2011 Art in a Box Ltd underwent its next evolution, being renamed as Gallery van Gils Ltd.  This name change fits better with the ethos of doing everything personally, so personalising the name epitomises the commitment to the artists which are represented here.  It is also a tribute to Bernice's mother who supported the idea, the concept and the dream from the beginning and whose help made it a reality.
